The 6th Bilateral Seminar on Operational Oceanography Cooperation between China and France and the Bilateral Symposium on Marine Disaster Prevention and Mitigation on the 60th anniversary of the establishment was held in our university

In order to further strengthen the exchanges and cooperation between China and France in the independent research and development of Marine Forecasting Technology and Marine Disaster Prevention and Reduction Service Support, and to promote the construction of operational oceanography capacity between the two countries, on September 24, jointly hosted by the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center of China and the Mercator Marine International Center of France, the 6th Bilateral Seminar on Operational Oceanography and the Bilateral Seminar on Marine Disaster Prevention and Mitigation were held. This is in celebration of  the 60th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and France. The two events were organized by our University, took place at the International Conference Hall and were attended by Ms. Cai Biling, Assistant Inspector of the Department of International Cooperation, Ministry of Natural Resources, Mr. Dai Ningzhi (Guillaume DELVALLEE), Consul General of the Consulate General of the French Republic in Chengdu, Ms. Liu Guimei, Deputy Director of the National Marine Environmental Forecasting Center, Ms. Marie Drevilon of Mercator Marine International Center. Prof. Wu Xi, Vice President of our University, attended the opening ceremony and delivered a speech.

Deputy Director Liu Guimei reviewed the last ten years of cooperation between the National Marine Environmental Prediction Center and Mercator Marine International Center, and spoke highly of a series of important cooperation results achieved by the two sides in the fields of marine numerical prediction model and data assimilation technology research and development, cross-comparison and verification of forecast systems.

Ms. Marie Drevilon said that the successful convening of the conference has set up a platform for Chinese and French experts and scholars in the field of Marine Technology to display and exchange knowledge, and has played a positive role in promoting the cooperation and development of the Marine Industry between China and France. She believed that scientists from China and France have not only created important academic achievements but have also established profound friendship during the cooperation process.

Vice President Wu Xi, as the representative of the organizer of the meeting, expressed his best wishes for the prospects of China-France cooperation. He said that in the context of the global climate change crisis and frequent Marine disasters, strengthening China-France exchanges and that the cooperation in the Marine Science and Technology is crucial to improving the two countries' ability to cope with Marine disasters, ensuring the safety of people's lives and property, and promoting the sustainable development of the Marine economy.

On behalf of the two governments, China and France, Assistant Inspector Cai Biling and Consul General Dai Ningzhi, respectively, extended their congratulations for a successful convening of the meetings and affirmed their long-term support to sustain this cooperation between Chinese and French scientific research institutions in the field of maritime affairs, believing that such cooperation will benefit the two countries. Ms. Cai Biling also mentioned that the United Nations Ocean Conference 2025 in Nice, France will be co-hosted by France and Costa Rica that China recognizes the great importance of this conference and will actively support its success.

The symposium focused on ocean models, data assimilation and development of ocean services, the application of artificial intelligence in ocean forecasting and related achievements, ocean digital twins for a predictable and safe ocean, multi-scale ocean processes, and future directions for cooperation. More than 400 representatives of experts, scholars, teachers and students from Chengdu University of Information Technology, Fudan University, Xiamen University, Ocean University of China, Sun Yat-sen University, Hohai University, Institute of Atmospheric Physics of Chinese Academy of Sciences and other Chinese and French research institutes like the Mercator Marine International Center, Meteo France, the Union Nationale Superieure des Mines et des Telecommunications, the Laboratory for Research in Space Geophysics and Oceanography of the French National Centre for Scientific Research, the Centre for Forecasting attended the seminar.
